The sister of a man who killed his family in their Victoria-area home says her brother was a kind man, but was distraught over the breakup of his marriage.

Lisa Yi was testifying about her Peter Lee during an inquest into last fall's deaths in Oak Bay, in which Lee killed his six-year-old son, his wife and her parents before killing himself.

Yi says Lee was the baby of her family, was kind, generous, and very funny.

But she was also aware of his gambling problems and says he became sad when his marriage failed, saying he was nervous and tried to make everything smooth with his wife, Sunny.

The coroner's jury was also told it will hear videotaped evidence from Sunny, who gave a statement to police before she died last September 4th.

The statement came after Lee was charged with assault over a staged car crash that injured his wife, who was a passenger in the couple's Land Rover.

Lee's bail conditions included an order that he stay away from his wife and the family home.
