In Kelowna B.C., the cat really did come back the very next day -- and SPCA workers couldn't be happier.

Staff at the local shelter alerted police Tuesday after two teens snatched a black cat from their shelter -- less than two weeks before Halloween.

Assistant manager Karen Stirling says they were worried the teens took "Mocha" as part of a Halloween prank.

Stirling left a crate by the back door last night just in case the crooks brought her back but it wasn't until the morning that a break came in the case of the missing feline.

Late Wednesday, staff received an anonymous phone call saying the thieves dropped the cat in a nearby field.

The caller said she was having lunch at the local mall food court and overheard teens saying they took the cat -- but when it scratched one of the teens -- they let her go in the field and couldn't catch her again.

An SPCA employee went to the area straightaway, and found Mocha meowing in the bushes. The five-year-old is now safely back at the shelter.

Stirling says it's a good thing someone called in to tell them about the cat's whereabouts.

"It's an area we normally wouldn't search," she says. "There are a lot of wildcats out there."

"Thank goodness she's okay," says Stirling. "Maybe those kids thought it was a joke, but it wasn't very funny."
