The Vancouver SPCA is juggling with what could soon become a critical situation.

The shelter has nearly 50 cats and kittens, and half of them are in isolation because of flu-like symptoms. The SPCA desperately needs foster homes to temporarily take in the furry felines.

"If you have a cat already and it's been vaccinated then it's not going to be a problem for them at all, we're looking for foster homes temporarily until they're over this illness," said the SPCA's Mark Vosper.

The SPCA usually sees an influx of cats at this time of year for several reasons. People go on vacation and give up their pets, and over-breeding leads to just too many kittens.

Either way, the shelter cannot take in any more cats until it finds homes for the ones already in its care.
