Two children are recovering at home after being badly injured in an unprovoked attacked by a Rottweiler while walking in their Surrey, B.C. neighbourhood on Friday night.

Eight-year-old Kumuljeet Singh Hans and his four-year-old sister Harmon were bitten by the dog while they were with their grandmother in the 13000 block of 88th Avenue near 131st Street.

"I started screaming, and he let go and started running after my sister," said Kumuljeet.

Harmon needed 50 stitches to repair one bite on her leg.

This is the second attack by a dog in Surrey this month.

"The grandmother had the four-year-old in her arms, trying to pull her away from the dog, and the dog literally had a hold on the child's leg," said Maryanne Peters, a resident in the area.

The dog's owner, Roamy Jassal, had adopted the dog just four days prior to the attack.

"If she would have told me he was like that, I would have returned him right away," he said. "It just happened. I didn't mean to hurt either of the (kids). I'm not like this, and neither is my family. They were just walking by, and it just happened."

Jassal has been fined $75 under a Surrey bylaw on vicious dogs.

The dog was taken into custody by the B.C. Society For The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and euthanized.

The SPCA says it will investigate whether the dog had a record of any other incidents, and whether the dog should have been kept in a more secure area.

Two weeks ago, 11-year-old Sean Bajwa suffered serious wounds to his head, arms and legs when he was attacked by a pit bull two weeks ago in Surrey.
