Prime Minister Stephen Harper has lauded the Sikh community of Abbotsford, B.C. for overcoming discrimination and succeeding in Canadian society.

Harper is one of several dignitaries, including B.C. Premier Christy Clark, who is attended 100th anniversary celebrations of the Gur Sikh Temple today.

The temple is the North America's longest-standing Sikh temple.

Harper says the anniversary is a historic milestone.

Clark says the Indo Canadian community has persevered despite discrimination and racism.

The temple was designated a national historic site in 2002.
