MISSION, B.C. - Three pit bull terriers that attacked a man and a horse over the weekend in Mission, B.C., are dangerous and should be destroyed, a city official said Monday.

The man was mauled by the dogs on his own property Saturday and escaped with leg wounds after jumping into a vehicle.

A horse was also attacked, but wasn't hurt.

Dennis Clark, spokesman for the District of Mission, said the district's lawyer will be preparing papers to go before a judge who will determine the fate of the animals.

"In our view the dogs are dangerous dogs as defined under the community charter. We will be seeking a court order to have them euthanized," he said.

Clark said there have been attacks on other animals in the past, but no one has witnessed the incidents to confirm whether it may have been the same dogs.

The district could also fine the owner of the dogs, Clark said, and there is the potential for civil action against the owner by the man who was attacked or the possibility of criminal charges.

"The more important issue is trying to ensure that these dogs can't attack anyone else in the future," he said.

It could take several weeks before the court process is complete and a decision is made on the animals' fate.
