A B.C. man accused of meeting a woman online and stealing her car during a date has been arrested.
Thomas James Newman was pulled over late Friday night driving a black Honda Civic that was reported stolen on Jan. 9.
The 36-year-old was wanted on a Canada-wide warrant for theft over $5,000. Police say they are also investigating whether he's linked to a string of similar thefts.
Const. Jana McGuinness says at least five women have been approached online in recent years by a faux-suitor who steals from them at the first available opportunity.
In January, CTV News found a profile under Newman's name on the dating website Meetup.com, which described him as "confident, charming and pretty much a joy to be around." The profile has since been removed.
McGuinness says Newman has a lengthy criminal record that includes charges of theft under $5,000 and possession of stolen property.
Police say online daters shouldn't let their guard down too quickly, no matter how charming their date may be, and should only meet up in public places until they are well-acquainted.
Newman is facing several charges relating to possession of stolen property and driving offences. He is due to appear in court Saturday.
