The B.C. New Democrats are asking Elections BC to investigate whether Premier Christy Clark has misused public funds to campaign in a byelection that she hopes will earn her a seat in the legislature.

The official Opposition party has filed a complaint that Clark has used taxpayers' money to organize press events in the Vancouver Point Grey riding where she is running for a seat.

The complaint says Clark has used government staff to organize events directly related to her campaign, including a housing funding announcement on May 5 and a news conference April 28 to announce the expansion of Ronald McDonald house.

Their letter also alleges that Clark's campaign Twitter feed was, until Sunday, displayed on the website of the office of the premier.

NDP provincial secretary Jan O'Brien says Clark has a poor track record when it comes to dirty campaign tricks and bending the rules, and an investigation is needed to ensure public trust in the election process.

Voters in Vancouver Point Grey -- the riding vacated by former premier Gordon Campbell -- go to the polls Wednesday.
