The New Westminster Police Department is investigating a vicious dog attack that injured two people early Thursday morning.

Emergency crews were called to reports of screaming and barking inside an apartment on Ash Street near Fourth Avenue just before 3 a.m.

Police say a man and woman were attacked on their heads and faces, but it's not clear what prompted the mauling. When officers arrived at the home, they found the dog secured to the apartment balcony.

"I've had no problem with it," said neighbour Ray Ledger, speaking about the dog. "You'd walk by and it'd bark from the balcony and that was about it."

The woman suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries to her face and was transported to a local hospital by ambulance. The man was also taken to hospital with less severe injuries.

Police say they believe the dog is a pit bull, but the breed has not been confirmed.

The dog has since been removed from the building and is now in the custody of New Westminster Animal Services.
