A large dog been seized after it fatally attacked a puppy in Yaletown Sunday afternoon.
The 5-month-old cocker spaniel puppy was attacked near Smithe and Homer streets in plain view of the dog’s owner at about 4 p.m. According to a witness, the couple that own the dog, described as a pitbull by witnesses, was dropped off in a cab when the dog jumped out of the car and pounced on the puppy, named Mila.
The dog was taken away by animal control at about 5 p.m. but witnesses said the dog’s owners tried to leave the scene of the attack.
Kelly Tompkins was walking with the puppy’s owner when the pitbull ran towards the puppy and attacked.
“Before we could pick it up the dog pounced on us and started ripping at my friend’s dog,” she said. “Her insides were all over, my two friends were covered in blood.”
Nearly disemboweled in the attack, Mila was rushed to an animal clinic for emergency surgery.
She died of her injuries late Sunday night.
