A call from an alert citizen enabled police to foil the attempted abduction of a woman in East Vancouver, Saturday morning.

Vancouver police say a man is in custody and a woman is safe after officers responded to a call of a woman being forced at gun point into a vehicle in East Vancouver just before 11:00 a.m.

An alert citizen called police after seeing the man force the woman into an SUV in the 400 block of Garden Drive.

The vehicle drove off but was spotted moments later by Vancouver police officers in the area. The officers and a police dog began following in unmarked vehicles east onto Highway One and into Port Coquitlam where a takedown was initiated with the assistance of the Vancouver Police Emergency Response Team and the Coquitlam RCMP.

The woman was rescued uninjured and a loaded hand gun was seized from the SUV.

At this early stage in the investigation it appears that this incident may be related to a domestic situation, police said in a statement. The investigation is continuing.
