A pedestrian was struck and killed by a Coast Mountain bus as she crossed an East Vancouver intersection early Monday morning.

Vancouver police say the adult woman was crossing north at a marked crosswalk on East Hastings St. at Kootenay St. shortly after 7 a.m. when she was hit. The bus was turning left on a green light onto East Hastings.

She died at the scene. It is unknown if she was proceeding with a walk signal at the time of the accident.

There were no passengers in the #29 Joyce Station bus. The driver, a 10-year veteran with Coast Mountain, was taken to hospital and treated for shock.

"He wasn't injured but he was very shaken," company spokesperson Derek Zabel told ctvbc.ca.

Zabel said the driver is at home with his family and will be given as much time off as he needs to recover.

"The biggest concern is their mental state and their health after a fatal accident. This is not an easy thing to deal with."

The woman's death is the city of Vancouver's first traffic fatality of 2010. Her identity has not been released.

Accident adjudicators from Coast Mountain are working with Vancouver police investigators to determine what caused the crash.

The VPD has already interviewed a number of witnesses at the scene.
