Surrey RCMP spent the early hours of New Year's Day investigating after a man was stabbed at a late-night house party, and another was killed in a fatal car accident.

Police were first called to the 6900-block of 126th Street where a pedestrian had been struck while crossing traffic.

"It was raining, he was wearing dark clothes and began crossing mid-block between parked cars," Staff Sgt. Blair McColl said.

The man, who was in his early 50s, sustained massive head trauma in the crash. He later died of his injuries in hospital.

Police believe the driver tried to avoid hitting the victim, but roads were slick. Speed and alcohol are not believed to be factors.

The victim's name has not been released.

Young man stabbed

Later, at around 2 a.m., police were called to a house party in the 18900-block of 74th Avenue where a 22-year-old man had been stabbed.

Witnesses told police the party had been winding down when two men began fighting outside the residence. The victim was then stabbed multiple times in the abdomen.

"I believe he's had surgery," McColl said. "It doesn't appear to be life threatening at this point."

No arrests have been made.
