A 17-year-old Port Alberni girl is dead after being hit by a truck on Friday night while allegedly playing chicken with oncoming traffic.

Nanaimo RCMP say Cynthia Bernice Williams was killed on Highway 19a near the Nanoose First Nations lands at around 7:30 p.m. while she was crossing the highway.

"Numerous 911 calls were received just prior to the accident of a male and female who from all accounts were playing chicken with oncoming vehicles," said Const. Gary O'Brien in a release.

The area Williams was killed is also within 20 meters of a pedestrian overpass, O'Brien said.

A 26-year-old man was picked up a short distance from the scene and arrested for breaching an order to avoid contact with Williams.

The 67-year-old driver of the truck and his wife were not injured in the crash.

Anyone who has information on the accident, or the behaviour of Williams prior to the crash, is asked to contact the Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345 or Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
