Police are investigating a Surrey home invasion that ended with a dog being shot when the animal bit one of the intruders early Thursday morning.

Surrey RCMP say the break-in happened at 2:35 a.m. on 130th Street and that it appears the home was targeted.

A Bullmastiff  was shot in the upper neck area after two or three men entered the home.

"After the animal was shot, the suspects fled the area," Cpl. Drew Grainger told ctvbc.ca.

Police say nothing was stolen and the men left the home in a silver-coloured SUV.

The dog is expected to make a full recovery.
