A young alleged street racer bid a final farewell to his high-performance Lamborghini after he consented with B.C.'s Civil Forfeiture Office to have the luxury car sold Tuesday.
The muscle car was one of 13 seized in Surrey and White Rock in August after police say their young drivers – 12 men and one woman, all under the age of 21 -- were caught zooming along Highway 99 at speeds of up to 200 kilometres per hour.
Three of the four remaining cars seized are still waiting to go before the courts, and the civil forfeiture office could not comment on the going rate for the Lamborghini, fearing it could affect future sales.
However, the list price for a similar model is around $250,000.
The 13 seized cars were estimated to be worth more than $2 million and included Ferraris, Maseratis, Lamborghinis, Mercedes, Aston Martins and Audis.
The vehicles were returned to the young people after a seven-day impoundment, but the Civil Forfeiture Office had enough evidence to file civil claims against five vehicles.
During a police investigation, one of those cases escaped legal action "due to additional evidence that came to light while the cases were ongoing" according to the office.
When a car is sold, forfeiture proceeds go back into the office to cover fees including litigation and in some cases, the profit is shared with victims directly affected by the crime.
At the time of the seizure, six of the drivers still had their N, or novice, licence while one driver was driving on a foreign licence.
Each driver received a $196 ticket for driving without due consideration and had to pay towing and storage charges.
