A Surrey, B.C., man has been charged with sexually assaulting a nine-year-old girl inside her Guildford home last month.

Surrey RCMP arrested Kyle Berkson, 36, on Friday. He has been charged with break and enter to commit sexual assault with a weapon, sexual interference, and invitation to sexual touching.

According to police, the young girl was attacked inside her bedroom in the 10300-block of 149th Street on April 23.

The girl's grandmother told CTV News at the time that the child was raped after a man broke into the family home just before 4 a.m.

"He warned her, stabbed her in the arm to make sure she knew he had a knife…and just told her, ‘Don't make any noise,' and said that he had a friend with him and would make sure that me and my husband would be harmed."

The grandmother said that she found two deadlocks unfastened and a bathroom door unlocked after the attack -- all locks that she had secured before going to bed for the night.

She said that she was suspicious that only someone who knew the house and the little girl would know how to find her bedroom, which is separated from the rest of the house by a bathroom.

"Would most normal people know to walk through the bathroom?"

Police have declined to comment on whether Berkson is known to the family.

He is in police custody, and is scheduled to make an appearance in court on Monday.
