It is the end of an era for transportation in B.C.'s Greater Vancouver area.

The Albion Ferry made its last-ever voyage Friday at mid-day, bringing to an end 52 years of free sailings between Maple Ridge and Fort Langley.

Ferry traffic will now be routed to the new $800 million Golden Ears Bridge.

"The Albion Ferry has been a staple as the main transportation connection between Langley and Maple Ridge, it will be sad to see it go" Albion Ferry President Dave Miller said in a press release.

The two Albion ferries, the Kulleet and Klatawa, have been a significant commuter route, saving drivers from a lengthy drive through Coquitlam and Surrey to cross the Fraser River over the Port Mann Bridge.

The Albion Ferry has made approximately eighty trips a day, moving 4,500 vehicles, while the new bridge span will have capacity for several thousand vehicles per direction per hour.

The ferries have been in service since June 1957, carrying an estimated 1.5 million vehicles and four million passengers annually.
