A retired man from Port Alberni was shot and killed in his home in Panama a week ago, leaving his family to wonder what went wrong.

“We wonder if they targeted the wrong house,” Joe Potrebenko’s father Mike told CTV News. “They kept asking, where’s the money? Where’s the guns?”

The younger Potrebenko grew up in Port Alberni and retired to Panama five years ago. He posted many videos of his live there on YouTube.

Potrebenko, 53, was killed in a home invasion on July 18.

“Three intruders walked in, and as Joe stood up from the couch, he was shot within 5 seconds of when they entered the house,” Mike Potrebenko said.

The Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed the death of a Canadian in Panama and is offering support from the consulate to the victim’s family.

Mike Potrebenko said his son will be remembered as someone who always had a smile on his face and liked to tell jokes.
