A Vancouver Island Mountie has been charged with assault over allegations he punched a partygoer in the face while responding to a noise complaint.

Nanaimo RCMP Const. Francois Veillette was responding to complaints about a loud party on Aug. 1 when the alleged assault took place.

A public complaint was made the next day, and police ordered criminal and code of conduct investigations into the four-year veteran of the force.

Veillette, 39, will appear in court on Jan. 11 to face one charge of assault causing bodily harm. He has been reassigned to desk duty.
