Every Friday, Lynda Steele dips into the viewer mailbag to answer your questions. This week, Steele on Your Side looks at the water safety of city fountains and the Immigrant Investor Program.

Decorative fountain water safety

Lucinda wrote Steele on Your Side to ask about the safety of water in decorative fountains in city parks.  She says she's noticed young children playing in the fountains and wants to know where the water comes from.

The City of Vancouver told us the water in the fountains comes from city water mains. The fountains recirculate the water through filtration systems and water is only added when the levels are low.

The city says it wouldn't recommend drinking the water since children and animals do play in them.

Immigration Investor Program update

A group of Chinese millionaires who were suing the Canadian government over the now-scrapped Immigrant Investor Program have had their plans scuttled.

When the program was stopped in February, 60,000 backlogged applicants were on the waitlist.

A group of those applicants fought back, arguing their applications should still be processed.

But a Federal Court judge has rejected that challenge. The judge ruled that the government acted within the law and would-be immigrants have no right to force the Canadian government to fulfill the promises of the cancelled visa program.
