The British Columbia SPCA has rescued nearly 300 animals from the wildfires burning in West Kelowna and wants the public's help to take care of them.

"Our special provincial constables have been working around the clock to rescue horses, livestock and domestic pets from behind the evacuation lines," said Bob Busch, general manager of operations for the BC SPCA.

Forty-two additional pets have been dropped off at the SPCA for temporary shelter by the 11,000 Kelowna residents who have evacuated their homes.

Busch said horses and livestock have been placed in local facilities, including the Kelowna Riding Club, until their owners can return home.

The SPCA is placing evacuated pets with foster families but the organization -- which depends on public funds -- needs supplies, such as large pet carriers, litter trays, towels, hay for horses and donations to help take care of them.

Dr. Jim Inglis, manager of the Kelowna branch of the SPCA, said the organization is proud to be part of the rescue effort and appreciates the support given from individuals and businesses.

"This is an amazing community that really comes together in a crisis, as we learned during the forest fires in 2003," he said.

The SPCA is asking those who can help the rescued animals to visit spca.bc.ca or call 1-800-665-1868 to make a donation.
