Another 1,500 homes in West Kelowna have been asked to prepare for evacuation, due to the massive wildfires that have already forced 11,000 residents from their homes.

The Regional District of Central Okanagan has released an updated list of areas at risk of being subjected to an evacuation order, including:

  • West Kelowna Estates to Bear Creek Road
  • The area on the North side of Shannon Lake Road from Stevens and Bartley including Talus Ridge Drive, Boulder Lake Boulevard, Pebble Place, Stonegrove Cresent, Cobble Stone Drive and Tuscany in the Talus Ridge subdivision.

About 6,000 residents in approximately 1,500 homes located on the following streets in West Kelowna Estates have received evacuation alerts:

Fire Information Officer Jeanne Rucker says the Glenrosa fire, which began at around 2:40 p.m. Saturday, has now spread across 350 hectares of land - but that firefighters are gathering en mass to combat the raging fire.

"By the end of this afternoon we'll have 210 people on the fire, 10 helicopters, three air tanker groups, and heavy equipment such as dozers," Rucker said.

Early Sunday morning, residents were evacuated from the following streets:

  • Bartley Road south of Lenz to Stevens
  • Jok Mar Ct.
  • Rosewood Ct
  • Rosemary Ct
  • Rosealee Ln
  • Rose Tree Rd
  • Rosemeadow Dr.
  • Roseanne Ct
  • Roseabbey Dr
  • Rosewood Dr
  • Rosefield Dr
  • McDougall Rd

Residents affected by the evacuation order are being asked to report to emergency evacuation reception centres at Royal LePage Place at 2760 Cameron Rd. and Mount Boucherie Secondary School at 2751 Cameron Rd. Concerned residents or relatives can call 1-250-469-8490. Residents who are unable to reach evacuation centres are asked to call 778-797-2269.

Air quality warning in effect

The Interior Health Authority has also issued a warning about deteriorating air quality due to smoke. Kelowna residents with respiratory conditions are asked to take precautions, including drinking plenty of fluids, staying cool and limiting outdoor physical activity.
