Police are applauding a B.C. woman for chasing down a suspected hit-and-run driver after he fled the scene where an elderly pedestrian was killed this weekend.

Thirty-year-old Paige was heading home from dinner with friends in Surrey Saturday night when she watched the horrific collision unfold at the intersection of 105th Avenue and 152nd Street.

"The guy in front of me slammed on his brakes. I kind of braked and slid a little and realized that, oh my gosh, he had just hit something," she told CTV News.

Paige says it was raining hard and the light was green, but an elderly woman was in the crosswalk. The 82-year-old was struck and killed by a car -- allegedly the one ahead of Paige.

"He had walked up to her, and I realized, oh my gosh, he had hit a pedestrian, and I thought for sure she hadn't made it," Paige said.

She was calling 911 for help when she says she saw the driver get back into his car and bolt from the scene. Paige's emotions boiled over into anger, and she decided to give chase.

"I couldn't believe that with this big hole in his front windshield that he was driving in the condition that it was in. I just stayed on him and I stayed on the phone with 911, and I kind of led them to where we were going," she said.

Mounties set up a roadblock and met the suspect shortly after. The 44-year-old Port Coquitlam man was immediately arrested.

Paige says she's not comfortable being called a hero, but hopes that others might be inspired by her actions.

"I just kind of did what my insides told me to do. I'm more than happy that he was found and this family doesn't have to wonder and ask questions. That makes me feel a lot better, for sure," she said.

But Cpl. Drew Grainger says her actions were definitely heroic and Mounties are considering a commendation.

"Because of the selfless act, because this witness took the responsibility of doing the right thing, it has set this investigation ahead by light years, and the contribution she has made is absolutely amazing," he said.

Charges have yet to be laid in connection with the crash, and the suspect has been released from custody.
