A B.C. Mountie with nearly two decades on the job is facing drunk-driving charges after he allegedly sideswiped another vehicle and fled the scene while off-duty.
Cpl. Tony Bernard, 42, has been charged with impaired and dangerous driving, refusing to provide a breath sample and failing to stop after an accident after he was pulled over by Delta police on Sept. 15.
Officers were called when another driver reported that a car had struck theirs and then driven away in the 5400-block of Highway 17. The driver wrote down the licence plate of the car, and police were able to track it down.
Bernard, a 19-year member currently with the Richmond RCMP, was driving his personal vehicle at the time.
RCMP spokeswoman Cpl. Annie Linteau said Bernard has not been suspended from duty, but is not currently working.
He is scheduled to appear in Surrey provincial court on Nov. 21.
