Vancouver police are investigating after an overnight shooting and possible armed ambush in a posh area of Kitsilano.

Officers responded to a shots fired call near Trafalgar Street and West 15th Avenue around 1:30 a.m. Friday after several people reported hearing the sound of gunfire and tires squealing.

Officers arrived to find a Dodge minivan stopped in the 2700-block of West 16th Avenue. Police believe the van's driver sped out of a back laneway to escape gunfire.

"He sort of careened through the streets nearby and hit several parked cars," Const. Jana McGuinness told reporters at a press conference from the scene Friday.

The 29-year-old driver was unharmed, but was taken to hospital for assessment.

Investigators from the VPD Robbery/Assault Squad say they're confident the incident is targeted and that the suspects were waiting in the lane when the van drove through.

A shell casing was recovered at the scene. It is not known if the victim lives in the area.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the VPD Robbery/Assault Squad at 604-717-2541 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
