Vancouver City Coun. Geoff Meggs is scheduled to undergo spinal surgery this week after he was hit by a car while biking Tuesday morning.

Fellow Coun. Kerry Jang told ctvbc.ca that Meggs was hit while riding his bike on Angus Drive near 51st Avenue at about 8 a.m.

He will need surgery to repair separated vertebrae in his neck, but did not suffer any head injuries. However, "He doesn't quite remember what happened," Jang said.

Despite his injuries, Jang said that Meggs is "in good spirits, and cracking a few jokes."

The driver of the car that hit Meggs remained at the scene and was "quite distraught," Jang said.

Meggs's accident meant that he missed the opening of the new two-way bike lane on the Dunsmuir viaduct Wednesday morning. Meggs, a member of the city's bicycle advisory committee, had pushed for construction of the lane.
