A mock car accident was staged at a Burnaby, B.C., high school this morning to give students insight on drinking and driving.
ICBC placed a damaged car with its roof cut off at Alpha secondary school, as though an impaired driver had crashed the vehicle into a tree on school grounds.
"The students didn't know about this in advance," Principal Ron Hall told ctvbc.ca. "It caught many of them by surprise."
A few students at the school acted as victims of the crash. There was a death, an arrest and multiple severe injuries.
The mock crash was followed by a presentation from RCMP officers, paramedics and a survivor of a crash caused by drinking and driving.
"The students gave a standing ovation at the end," Hall said. "It was quite amazing and very moving."
ICBC and the RCMP act out a mock crash once every year in the province.
