A special prosecutor has been named to oversee the drunk driving investigation involving a BC Liberal MLA.

Jane Thornthwaite acknowledged in February she made a mistake and said she would have to earn back the trust of her constituents.

On Friday, the criminal justice branch announced that Vancouver lawyer Mark Jette would act as a special prosecutor in the case.

His job will be to conduct an independent review of the police report recommending for or against charges.

Premier Gordon Campbell has said he wouldn't ask Thornthwaite to resign.

Thornthwaite said in February she takes full responsibility for her actions and has apologized to family, friends and people in her riding.
