The stepfather of a 10-year-old boy responsible for accidentally shooting and killing a B.C. teenager this summer has now been charged in connection to the death.

Seventeen-year-old Michael Voth of Fernie was instantly killed by a single shotgun blast on June 16 after a younger boy picked up the loaded firearm and inadvertently pulled the trigger.

The children were at the Jaffray home of 51-year-old George Lewis Phillips, the 10-year-old's stepdad and owner of the gun. Phillips has now been charged with criminal negligence causing death and careless storage of a firearm.

Police say no adults were home when Voth was killed, but several other young people were present for the shooting.

The shooter has not been charged because he is under the age of 12.
