An RCMP dive team recovered the body of David Gowing from a lake in the north Okanagan on Saturday.

The 57-year-old from Armstrong had disappeared while apparently ice fishing on Sugar Lake on New Year's Day. His snowmobile was located at the edge of the lake, northeast of Lumby.

There was also a hole in the ice about nine metres from shore. Gowing's body was found about 9 metres below the surface.

RCMP Cpl. Henry Proce said Gowing seems to have been seated on a bucket when the ice around him gave way, and he was unable to climb out of the water.

Gowing's family said he frequently ice fished at Sugar Lake.
