A search is under way at a frozen lake in the British Columbia interior after a snowmobiler was reported missing.

Searchers are hunting for any sign of the 57-year-old man from Armstrong. It's believed he went ice-fishing on Sugar Lake, north east of the small community of Lumby.

Lumby is located in the north Okanagan area, east of Vernon.

His snowmobile was found on the shore and a hole was spotted in the ice.

"He went out onto the ice, not too far, perhaps 30 feet out on the lake, and it appears the ice actually fractured underneath him," said RCMP Cpl. Henry Proce.

"He was a real sportsman and just an all around nice guy,'' said Mel Gowing, the brother of the missing man. "A hard working, nice kind of guy."

The man's family says he has fished Sugar Lake many times in the past. A dive team is expected to join the search tomorrow morning.
