More than 500 people have signed an online petition to rename the Delta, B.C., park where 15-year-old Laura Szendrei was brutally attacked last month in her name.

The petition  urges people across Canada who have heard Szendrei's story to sign in support of locals who "will drive by this park and always remember what happened."

"Let's take it back," it reads.

Szendrei was attacked in broad daylight in a wooded area of Mackie Pak on Sept. 30. Friends say she was headed to a football game at nearby Sands Secondary School.

She died in hospital the next morning with her family by her side.

Delta city officials have announced the trees and bushes that line the park will be trimmed down to improve visibility.

Emotional public memorial

On Friday night, hundreds attended a public memorial at the North Delta Recreation Centre to honour the beloved teenager. Friends remembered her as a kind and caring person who always had time for others.

"She never really said anything bad, I don't know why anyone would do something to such a sweet person," friend David Bryant said.

"When you were in trouble you could talk to her she'd be able to help you out, give you the words you needed to hear."

Police are continuing to investigate the homicide, but no suspects have been identified despite following hundreds of public tips.

Anyone with information about the attack is asked to contact Delta police at 604-946-4411.
