Vancouver police are investigating separate pedestrian-involved car accidents -- including one hit-and-run -- that left a man dead and a woman in critical condition overnight.

The first incident occurred shortly before midnight when a 61-year-old Surrey, B.C. man was struck in the 200-block of East Cordova Street by what appeared to be a taxi.

He succumbed to his injuries Saturday morning in hospital. His name is being withheld at the request of his family.

Investigators later determined the car involved was a production vehicle for the film and television industry made to resemble a taxi. The driver is cooperating with police.

Contributing factors in the crash are still under investigation.

Hit-and-run leaves woman critical

Shortly after midnight, a 34-year-old Vancouver resident was hit by an SUV in a second accident, this time in South Vancouver.

Witnesses reported the collision at the intersection of 60th Avenue and Main Street. Police say the driver failed to stop and left the scene before being identified.

The female victim was rushed to hospital and remains in critical condition with unconfirmed injuries.

Police are searching for a dark coloured 2003-2007 Nissan Murano with front-end damage, including a broken headlight. Const. Lindsey Houghton issued a statement Saturday urging the driver to come forward.

"The driver made a decision to leave the scene at the time but now the right thing to do is contact police," Houghton said.

Anyone with information on the crash is asked to contact the VPD Collision Investigation Unit at 604-717-3012 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
