A girder so large it had to be shipped in three pieces from China has been installed at a North Vancouver shipyard.

The 500 tonne girder is part of a new shipyard crane currently under construction at the Seaspan shipyard. It was put in place on Wednesday morning by local ironworkers.

Crews had to bring in a special crane, capable of lifting 1,400 tonnes, to complete the job. The construction is part of the company’s ongoing modernization efforts to build new coast guard vessels.
