A young Vancouver Island girl was seriously injured Tuesday night after falling through the roof of an elementary school.

It happened in Oyster River, a town between Courtenay and Campbell River on the island's east coast.

The 12-year-old was playing with four friends on top of the Oyster Bay Elementary School when she lost her footing and stepped onto a skylight.

The girl fell through the roof onto a classroom floor – a drop of about six metres.

She was conscious when rescue crews arrived but was in a lot of pain.

An RCMP investigation is underway.
