A man police say broke a 98-year-old man's hip during an attempted robbery at a Vancouver Island Walmart store has now been charged.
Nanaimo RCMP released video footage of the young suspect trying to shoplift DVD's on Friday. The man can be seen shoving the elderly man to the ground in his hurry to evade security guards and get out of the store.
The senior had hip surgery last week but is expected to remain in the hospital for some time because of complications.
Const. Gary O'Brien said the suspect was taken into custody without incident on Sunday.
Robert Wesley Russell, 27, is charged with theft, uttering threats and criminal negligence causing bodily harm.
O'Brien said media coverage aided its investigation.
"The public and our members were incensed by this callous act and are pleased to have the person allegedly responsible for this crime behind bars," he said.
Russell is scheduled to appear in Nanaimo provincial court for a bail hearing Monday.
