One person is dead and another three are injured, including the victim's son, after an SUV plunged down a steep embankment during a camping trip on Vancouver Island.

Mounties say the four occupants of the vehicle were on a gold panning expedition and were in the process of finding a place to camp when their 1992 Ford Explorer went off the road.

The driver, 62-year-old Phillip George Morley of Qualicum Beach, was rushed to hospital but died from his injuries a short time later.

His son, 32-year-old Caleb Morley, was airlifted to Victoria General Hospital with serious head and back injuries. Two other passengers, both Alberta residents, suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Investigators say preliminary findings reveal brake failure may be at fault for the accident. None of the passengers were wearing seatbelts when the car plunged down the embankment.
