Temperature records that have stood for 77 years were among those melted Sunday as a heat wave bakes B.C.
Environment Canada reports Chilliwack, east of Vancouver, and Victoria both shattered heat records set in 1933.
Downtown Victoria sweltered in 33.2 degree heat, breaking the previous high of 32.8, while Chilliwack posted 35.7 degrees, surpassing the old mark by 2.4 degrees.
In all, 18 temperature records were set in B.C. on Sunday.
Among them, the Vancouver Island community of Port Alberni endured a blistering 36.4 degrees, while Bella Coola on the Central Coast broke a 25-year-old record with a setting of 31.4 degrees.
Cooler marine air is expected to ease B.C.'s current heat wave by Tuesday, although the Fraser Canyon communities of Lillooet and Lytton are forecast to reach 38 degrees on Monday, moving them within fried-egg-on-the-sidewalk range of record highs for the date.
