A former city planner in Surrey, B.C. has been charged with breach of trust and corruption for his handling of a development application.

Akonyu Akolo faces charges of accepting secret commissions, breach of trust by a public official and fraudulent concealment.

Mounties are releasing very little information about the case, except to say that the charges relate to a development application and that there are no allegations of wrongdoing against the applicant.

The investigation into Akolo began almost a year ago in April 2010, and the city released few details at the time. He was fired from his job with the city soon after.

While Mayor Dianne Watts was coy about the case in public, the city filed suit against Akolo on April 16, claiming that he misappropriated city funds to buy a home in Delta.

The city is suing Akolo for breach of contract, breach of fiduciary duty, intentional and negligent misrepresentation, conversion and misappropriation of funds, fraud and deceit.

None of the allegations in the suit have been proven in court.
