Celebration of Light fireworks organizers announced Sunday that China has won the three-night "Battle of Past Champions" competition over Spain and Canada.

On Saturday night, hundreds of thousands of people packed Vancouver's English Bay to see Canada's display titled "Then and Now."

But after judges' deliberations, China was named the winner.

"China deserved the win," said Patrick Brault, Celebration of Light producer in a news release. "Their use of color and choreography were simply flawless. The judges had a hard time deciding the winner because it was so close, but in the end it was a few points that made the difference."

Vancouver police said that the final night of fireworks saw an increase in criminal activity compared to the previous two events.

Police combined forces with Transit Police in an effort to intercept liquor before it could be brought downtown. Of the 1201 liquor pour outs in total, 565 were conducted by the Transit Police, who positioned themselves along transit lines throughout the evening.

Const. Jana McGuinness said that there were 96 violation tickets issued, mostly for liquor offences, 22 drug seizures and 13 weapons seizures, including brass knuckles, knives and a pellet gun.

Twenty-five people were arrested for offences ranging from public intoxication, drug-related offences and breaching the peace.

The VPD Marine Unit worked with the Coast Guard to keep an eye on more than 700 boats in English Bay. Two vessels were escorted to shore for impaired operation and one stolen boat was recovered by police.
