The son of a B.C. woman recently convicted in the driving death of a four-year-old girl has been found guilty in the stabbing death of a young father.
Joshua Berner, then 24, was charged after Benjamin Warland, 23, was found suffering fatal stab wounds on the lawn of a home in Richmond on Feb. 1, 2009.
Police alleged Berner stabbed Warland, the father of a young boy, multiple times after an altercation on a city bus spilled out onto the street. The accused maintained he acted in self-defense.
Berner said he learned to fight in jail while incarcerated on unrelated charges.
On Monday, a B.C. Supreme Court judge found Berner guilty of second-degree murder. The jury has been instructed to come back with recommendations about parole eligibility.
Berner is the son of Carol Berner, who was convicted for impaired and dangerous driving in the 2008 death of Alexa Middelaer.
