Another B.C. hospital is being criticized for depriving patients of proper care by pushing them into hallways and foyers a month after the death of a young woman in a hallway of an Abbotsford hospital.

The 20-year-old woman was admitted to the Abbotsford Regional Hospital on Dec. 21, and unexpectedly died four days later after being deemed appropriate for hallway care.

Diane McArthur, whose 81-year-old mother-in-law is now being treated for unexplained seizures at the same hospital, is distressed her loved one's bed has been put into the lounge.

"We're concerned for her safety. She doesn't have a call bell," McArthur told CTV News. "She doesn't have a hook up for oxygen, she doesn't have a bathroom."

Linda Pipe, spokesperson for the Fraser Valley region of the BC Nurses' Union, is not surprised by the overcrowding problem. She says that within six month of the hospital's opening in 2008, patients were being pushed out of regular care rooms.

"It's now averaging 20 to 30, sometimes more, patients a day waiting for beds," Pipe told CTV News.

Calling the situation "dangerous," Pipe is concerned about patients' lack of privacy and their level of care, as well as the potential loss of dignity caused from being treated in hallways.

She also raised concerns over the health of patients who are being put in hallway beds, saying they are not always well enough to withstand the conditions.

"They are supposed to be stable patients who have the ability to look after themselves, who have to cognitive awareness to look after themselves, but we're finding more and more that seniors are getting put in the hallways and they're having to deal with lights at night," Pipe said.

On Tuesday overcrowding at the Royal Columbian Hospital in Metro Vancouver caused patients to be moved into busy hallways and the emergency lobby. The situation was reminiscent of last March, when the facility's Tim Horton's coffee shop was turned into a makeshift ward to handle patient overflow.

Fraser Health says part of the problem is that winter is an especially busy time at hospitals.

The Abbotsford Regional Hospital does have empty patient rooms, but patients can't use them because of lack of funding and staff, Dr. Anne Clarke of Fraser Health told CTV News. She also said the death of the 20-year-old woman in December was not due to her staying in a hallway and that her passing is being thoroughly reviewed.
