An American backcountry skier is dead after being caught in a massive snowslide near Golden, B.C. on Friday afternoon.

The man was buried by an avalanche while skiing with a group just west of Golden on Molars Bowl. He was dug out of the snow by fellow skiers and given CPR, and then airlifted to hospital by Golden Search and Rescue, according to RCMP.

Despite doctors' efforts to save the man, he died after succumbing to his injuries.

Police are not releasing the victim's identity and are in the process of notifying his next of kin.
