Campers will have to burn a little more money to stay in B.C.’s provincial parks this year, the government announced Thursday.

The Ministry of Environment said camping fees at most parks will increase $2 per night starting March 15, while others will see hikes of up to $5 per night.

Higher fees are needed to keep maintaining the province’s 1,029 parks and deal with a growing number of park users, according to the ministry.

“Our parks are truly a unique treasure. By increasing user fees in campgrounds, campers who use the parks system are helping to keep it sustainable for future generations to enjoy,” Environment Minister Mary Polak said in a statement.

Fees for sani-stations, mooring buoys, backcountry camping, picnic shelters and group camping are not increasing, and parking will remain free at all provincial parks.

More than 21 million people use B.C.’s provincial parks each year, the government said, and there are hundreds of millions of dollars in infrastructure that requires maintenance.

The camping fee hike is expected to bring in an extra $1.3 million to help pay for it.

The last system-wide increase was in 2010.
