The mother of one of the protesters arrested and charged after a protest on the streets of Vancouver turned ugly says her son is not the violent anarchist he is being made out to be.

Gloria Myers says her son Daniel Myers, 22, biked to Vancouver to be part of an environmental protest -- and then fell in with the wrong crowd.

"I believe in Vancouver's court system and I know they'll understand that he wasn't one of the violent people," she said from her home in Shoreline, Washington.

Myers was arrested during the "Heart Attack" march on Saturday morning that erupted into violence when black-clad thugs smashed windows and tossed newspaper boxes into the streets.

Two other people were charged: Vancouverites Charlotte Hannah, 23, and Willow Riley, 18. They have since been released from custody.

Myers said her son did have a bike chain in his hand but that is because he cycles -- he never intended to use it as a weapon. She didn't know if her son knew the other two protesters who have been charged.

Myers says her son's story has become big news in Washington.

"It's getting very personal, it's in our local paper, it's all over the place," she said. "Luckily (in custody) he's protected from all the news reports and especially the blogs. The blogs are terrible."

She said she believes her son will be released on Tuesday.
