A 20-year veteran of the Vancouver Police Department has been charged with assault with a weapon in connection with an incident last summer.

Sgt. Darcy Taylor was first on the scene for a fight call in the 2200-block of West Broadway when it is alleged he hit a man in the chest with his baton and knocked him down.

A complaint was filed in September. It is believed the complainant was not part of the fight.

A VPD investigation resulted in the recommendation of a single assault charge against Taylor, Insp. Mario Giardini of the VPD Professional Standards Section said Monday.

Taylor has been placed on "non-operational" duties and is expected to appear in court later this month.
