The holiday rush is already hitting Vancouver International Airport, and staff are offering tips to help travelers keep their trip through security swift as a sleigh ride.

The airport is expecting to see 1.6 million passengers pass through its gates this month, making it the busiest December on record.

With so many travelers, long lines are inevitable – but YVR said people can keep things moving simply by keeping dangerous and banned items out of their luggage.

“We’ve seen a pretty steady flow of items that are not permitted,” said Mathieu Larocque, spokesman for the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority.

“There are still passengers forgetting about these rules about the knives, the scissors, the liquids, so it’s important to always remind them to leave them at home.”

YVR held a show-and-tell Tuesday to display some of the hundreds of items travelers have had to surrender this week alone, including booze, realistic toy guns, snow globes, a large rock, brass knuckles, and even purses with brass knuckle handles.

Some items would be fine if they were put into a checked bag, Larocque said, but cramming them into carry-ons doesn’t fly.

YVR said another potential time-saver for travelers is to book parking in advance.
