The BC SPCA is searching for information after a black cat was found seriously injured, tied up, and emaciated at a dump in Cranbrook, B.C.

“She was bleeding a lot from her tail, which had been cut off, and she had several open wounds on her feet, legs and head,” says Brenna Baker, BC SPCA East Kootenay Branch manager, in a statement.

“It horrifies me to think that someone might do something like this to any animal, then leave her at the dump, suffering and in pain, tossed away like so much trash.”

A Good Samaritan found the feline, now named Malala, and took her to the BC SPCA East Kootenay Branch. From there she was rushed to the veterinarian for emergency treatment, and is expected to recover.

The cost of Malala’s lifesaving medical treatment, which included surgery for her tail, rehydration, and cleaning her wounds came to $1,200 – a bill the non-profit BC SPCA will be footing themselves.

Baker says she hopes Malala will find a “loving forever home” that will offer her a better chance in life than her previous owners.

“She is such a sweet pea and so full of love,” Baker says. “She’s got a long road to recovery, but we’re grateful to the man who spotted her at the Elko transfer station and wasted no time getting her to us.”

Anyone with information about how Malala came to be discarded at the dump is asked to call the BC SPCA cruelty hotline, at 1-855-622-7722.
