The Tooth Fairy appears to be leaving a smaller payout to kids in B.C. than their Canadian counterparts.

A new study released Thursday by Visa Canada found that children under 13 in British Columbia received an average of $2.47 per tooth, shy of the $2.80 national average.

Kids in the Atlantic provinces had the biggest reason to smile, with an average payday of $3.46 per tooth. More than a third of those kids – 35 per cent – will receive $5 or more per tooth.

Prairie province payouts range from $1 to $5, with the average being $2.43.  Children in Quebec received the least, an average of $2.03.

Not everyone is getting that sweet molar money. Thirteen per cent of Canadian kids receive no money for their lost tooth.

The cost of a Canadian cuspid pales in comparison to those living in the U.S. South of the border kids are getting an average of 24 per cent more: around $3.69 per tooth.

Visa Canada says the tooth paydays is a good opportunity for parents to start teaching their children about financial literacy and savings.

The poll, which polled 3,000 Canadian households, was conducted for Visa by GfK Canadian Omnibus Service and had a claimed margin of error of +/-3%.
